Residents of Round Rock enjoy a variety of outdoor activities, scenic terrain, quality schools and a forward-thinking government committed to economic development. For much of the 20th century, most residents commuted to jobs in nearby Austin, so Round Rock was a bedroom community with few high-paying jobs or major employers. During the 1990s, however, an influx of new and relocating businesses transformed Round Rock. The population swelled from fewer than 31,000 people in 1990 to almost 100,000 in 2010. The increase in both residential and commercial construction has meant that the people of Round Rock frequently turn to a locally based company, Alpha Roofing, for assistance with roof-related needs. At Alpha, we routinely provide roof repairs, shingle installation, metal roofing systems, modified bitumen systems, siding, preventive maintenance plans and roof inspections to homeowners and businesses in Round Rock, TX.
Round Rock, TX | Our History
The area surrounding Round Rock has yielded a great deal of archaeological evidence that shows prehistoric humans were living, camping and hunting in the region at least 11,200 years ago. When the first Europeans arrived during the 1700s, the primary occupants of the area were the Tonkawa, but there were also small numbers of Tawakoni, Mayeye, Yojuane and Kiowa in the area.
Early settlers established a small community in 1851 near Brushy Creek. The community was first named Brushy, but within three years, the large rock marking a low-water crossing of Brushy Creek provided a new name for the settlement. This crossing became part of the Chisholm Trail, a famous route used to move cattle from Texas to the railhead in Kansas.
Agriculture was the primary industry in Round Rock during the first few decades of the 20th century. Cotton was the main “money crop” although grapes and a variety of vegetables were also grown. Ranchers in the area raised primarily cattle and sheep. The town’s economic base began to shift during the 1950s with the arrival of Interstate 35. Between 1950 and 2010, the population grew from 1,683 to 99,887, and during the same period, major employers began to make their homes in Round Rock.
