Elgin’s motto — “Perfectly Situated” — is highly appropriate; Elgin is only about 25 miles from downtown Austin and approximately 18 miles from Bastrop. Although the distance to the state capital may have seemed a bit daunting in the days before the automobile, 25 miles is today considered an acceptable distance to commute, so Elgin is classified as a suburb of Austin. Thus, Austin’s growth has spurred Elgin’s growth in recent years. As more people move to Elgin and open businesses in the town, the need for quality, professional roofing services has led many to seek help from Alpha Roofing. Elgin, TX | The History
If the Colorado River had not flooded in 1869, Elgin might never have been founded. Originally, the railroad planned to route its tracks about 10 miles away. The major flood, however, forced the railroad to alter plans, so in 1871, they established a flag-stop depot near present-day Elgin and called it Glasscock. In 1872, the town was platted and renamed in honor of a railroad official, Robert Elgin. By 1879, the population had grown to approximately 400, and the town had a gin, a gristmill and a newspaper. Many of the town’s early residents had relocated from towns that had been bypassed by the railroad, including Perryville. Within another five years, Elgin was home to three gins, five general stores, a saloon, two druggists and a brick-making company.
By 1890, the population was approximately 1,100, and the town had added two hotels, a dentist, a broom factory, a newspaper and two doctors. The town’s growth had been fueled by the arrival of a second railroad that made Elgin a shipping point for livestock, wool and cotton.
Elgin continued to experience slow, steady growth throughout the 20th century. The high-quality clay in the area attracted additional brick plants, the proximity of Camp Swift stimulated the economy during World War II and the town continued to be a center for local farmers and ranchers. By 1950, more than 3,100 people made their homes in Elgin. However, the greatest increases in population occurred after 1980 and paralleled Austin’s growth. By 1990, Elgin’s population topped 4,800. A decade later, the population increased to 5,700, and by 2010, the population of Elgin exceeded 8,100. Current estimates show that the population is more than 9,300.
