Wood siding can add architectural interest that cannot be easily duplicated by other exterior materials, and with the right care, it can last for several decades before needing replacement. However, if you want your siding to last, you should inspect it carefully at least twice every year and have repairs made promptly. Although some signs that wood siding is in need of repair are obvious, other signs can be much more subtle. Here are some warning signs that can often be overlooked.
Exposed Nail Heads or Missing Nails
Wood siding is an organic material that expands and contracts slightly when the temperature changes. Over time, the movement can shift the nails, exposing the heads. If the siding has shifted severely, water penetration may have occurred, forcing the nails all the way out of their slots. Loose or missing nails increase the chances that siding could blow away in a strong wind.
Pest Infestations
Termites can invade wood siding, so you should be vigilant for any signs of infestation. Signs may include unusual mud structures on the bottom of the wall, an unexplained moldy scent, buckled wood, areas that look like they incurred mild water damage or unusual cracks in the surface of the siding. If wood siding is damaged, carpenter ants may tunnel into it; small piles of debris resembling wood shavings can be a sign of their activity. Rodents may also gnaw through wood siding to nest inside. Mice typically gain access near the ground, but squirrels may gnaw holes near the roof to enter the attic or garage. The holes made by rodents are normally visible, and you may hear their movements when you are indoors.
Mold or Mildew
Mold or mildew on your wood siding may indicate that water has penetrated beneath its surface, but it may just indicate that the siding needs a thorough cleaning. However, mold or mildew on interior surfaces corresponding to the same general location as on the exterior typically indicates that water is finding its way behind your siding.
Distorted or Obvious Seams
Most siding needs to be caulked at joints and vertical seams. Caulk can crack, shrink or fall away, leaving seams looking uneven and allowing boards to shift.
Other Warning Signs
Other signs that your wood siding is in need of repair include warping, bubbled or cracked paint, unusual water stains or dark streaks on the surface of the siding.
