Hardie board siding, also called cement board siding, has been available for several decades, but many people have never heard of it. It was invented by James Hardie, a building-materials manufacturer started in the late 19th century. In recent years, hardie board siding has been growing in popularity — and for good reasons.
Hardie Board Siding is Long-Lasting
Hardie board siding has excellent longevity and will probably last a lifetime. A 50-year warranty is the most common guarantee on the product. It is insect- and rot-resistant.
Hardie Board Siding Resists Storm Damage
Hardie board is ideally suited for areas with high humidity or rainfall levels like Central Texas. It can survive high winds and hailstorms without damage.
Hardie Board Siding is Fire-Resistant
Hardie board siding contains approximately 90 percent cement and sand, making it extremely resistant to fire. To illustrate, a house fire in St. Paul, Minnesota, torched fire trucks parked 60 feet away, while the hardie board siding on the house next door was unscathed although the home was 10 feet closer than the fire trucks.
Hardie Board Siding is Low-Maintenance
Every siding material requires some maintenance. Hardie board siding may need to be washed with a garden hose once or twice a year to remove accumulated dirt or grime. Most warranties on the finish are only for 15 years, so you might need to repaint it eventually. Otherwise, there is really nothing else you need to do in the way of routine maintenance.
Hardie Board Siding is Aesthetically Appealing
Options are virtually unlimited. You can choose from traditional lapboards or opt for designs that realistically mimic wood shakes, cedar shingles or many other styles of wall cladding. The range of color choices is even more extensive, making it easy to find the perfect shade to match your vision for your home.
